“Rose Up”

This year’s varsity volleyball team has strong chemistry, with all players agreeing that this year’s team is an actual family. Players and captain senior Shaianne Stanley say that everyone attempts to be all in at all times.
The team has a new head coach, Parkrose graduate Breanna Markham, after social studies teacher Brian Davis moved into the head football coach position this year after years of coaching volleyball.
“This season is where all the girls clicked,” Markham said. “I see us getting better as we get along. Every single person, including myself, can improve.”
According to Markham, the team started to focus on the feeling after the game and what the team takes from it. In other words, no matter if the game ends, in a win or loss, it’s the feeling after the game that counts. If their best isn’t enough, then that shows what they need to improve on.
For this season, Markham said she has high expectations, such as building a better program overall. She aspires for all players to improve their grades in all three teams: varsity, JV and JV2.
Although this season’s record hasn’t been solid, the team continues to push through. At their most recent tournament, they placed second. And the chance to make it to playoffs is still lingering.
Overall, the volleyball team is hoping for improvement. The strong bonds and teamwork they currently have can definitely help on making this season become a great one.
“You have to be a team at all times,” Stanley said, “or else it will fall apart.”
